PRESIDENT TRUMP DECLARES NIGERIA A “COUNTRY OF PARTICULAR CONCERN” OVER CHRISTIAN KILLINGS

President Donald J. Trump has formally designated Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” in response to the widespread killing of Christians, which he attributes to attacks by radical Islamist groups.

In a forceful statement, Trump said that Christianity in Nigeria “is facing an existential threat,” and criticized what he described as a “mass slaughter” of Christians. He claimed that out of 4,476 Christians killed globally, 3,100 were from Nigeria.

“When Christians … are slaughtered like is happening in Nigeria … something must be done,” Trump said. He called on Congressman Riley Moore, Chairman Tom Cole, and the House Appropriations Committee to launch an immediate investigation and report the findings to him.

“The United States cannot stand by while such atrocities are happening in Nigeria, and numerous other countries. We stand ready, willing, and able to save our great Christian population around the world,” Trump added.

The proclamation underscores increased tension over religious violence in Nigeria and signals Trump’s intention to foreground the issue in U.S. foreign policy.
