Segun Awolowo, former Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) and grandson of the late statesman Chief Obafemi Awolowo, has died.

His death was first reported on Thursday by Western Post, which indicated that full details surrounding the incident were still emerging as at press time. The development has thrown the Awolowo family and close associates into mourning.

Awolowo, a lawyer and public administrator, served as NEPC CEO from 2013 to 2021, where he led several national export-driven initiatives, including the Zero-Oil Plan aimed at expanding Nigeria’s non-oil revenue base. He was later appointed Secretary of the National Action Committee on the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Family sources and associates confirmed that he had been managing a health challenge before his passing.

Further details regarding the circumstances of his death are expected to be released by the family.
