Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has resigned from office with immediate effect.

His resignation was conveyed in a letter dated December 1 and addressed to President Bola Tinubu. In the letter, Badaru cited health reasons for his decision to step down.

President Tinubu has accepted the resignation and expressed appreciation for Badaru’s service to the nation. The President is expected to forward the name of a replacement to the Senate later in the week.

Badaru, 63, served as governor of Jigawa State between 2015 and 2023 before joining Tinubu’s cabinet on August 21, 2023.

His departure comes at a time when the President has declared a national security emergency and is expected to give further details on its implementation in the coming days, according to the Presidency.

The announcement was issued by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.
