BREAKING: Former President Jonathan Safe, Evacuated From Guinea-Bissau After Military Coup — Federal Government

The Federal Government has confirmed that former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan is safe and has been successfully evacuated from Guinea-Bissau following the military coup that overthrew the country’s government on Thursday.

The confirmation came from Kimiebi Ebienfa, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who briefed journalists in Abuja amid growing concerns about Jonathan’s safety.

Ebienfa said Jonathan, who had travelled to Guinea-Bissau as the head of the West African Elders Forum (WAEF) Election Observation Mission, was immediately placed under diplomatic protection once reports of the coup filtered in.

“Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan is very safe and out of Guinea-Bissau,” he assured.

Jonathan and his delegation had been in the West African nation monitoring the presidential and legislative elections held last Sunday. The mission was still carrying out post-election engagements when the military announced that it had seized power, plunging the country into uncertainty.

Diplomatic sources revealed that Nigerian officials worked closely with regional partners to ensure the former president’s secure exit as tensions escalated in Bissau.
