Defence Minister Assures No Punishment for Soldiers in Wike-Troops Altercation

The Minister of Defence, Mohammad Badaru Abubakar, has assured that no officer or soldier carrying out lawful duties will be punished over the recent altercation between troops and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, in Abuja on Tuesday.

Speaking during a ministerial briefing to flag off activities for the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day at the National Defence College, Abuja, Badaru reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to safeguarding members of the Armed Forces who perform their duties within the boundaries of the law.

He emphasized that the military remains a disciplined institution guided by constitutional authority and professional ethics, noting that the government will continue to support troops in their operational and peacekeeping roles across the country.

“The government will not allow any officer or soldier to be punished for carrying out lawful duties,” Badaru stated, adding that the Armed Forces must be allowed to discharge their responsibilities without undue interference.

The assurance follows public reactions to reports of a confrontation between military personnel and the FCT Minister’s convoy in Abuja earlier this week.

The Defence Minister further used the occasion to call for greater public support for the military, especially as preparations begin for the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration, which honours fallen heroes who paid the ultimate price in service to the nation.
