Edo Police arrest 26 irregular migrants from Cameroon, Burkina Faso

The Edo State Police Command has arrested 26 alleged irregular migrants from Burkina Faso and neighbouring Cameroon.

This was disclosed to journalists in Benin by the state Police Command Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Chidi Nwanbuzor.

He said that 24 migrants, comprising 16 males and eight females, were Cameroonians, while the remaining two, a male and a female, were from Burkina Faso.

Nwabuzor explained that the suspects were arrested at Afua village in Uzairue, following credible intelligence from the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Jattu headquarters, Etsako West Local Government Area of the state.

Nwanbuzor said: “Upon interrogation, it was discovered that they could not effectively express themselves in English.

“The little they could do was to identify their own country, and that is how we could know the numbers from each country.

“They confessed that a certain young man brought them to Nigeria through the Cameroon border.”

He explained that the suspects would be further investigated, profiled and handed over to the Nigeria Immigration Service.

The PPRO, however, claimed that a man who identified himself simply as an excavator operator said he brought them into Nigeria to join in the excavation contract he got, as he was a Nigerian who had lived and worked in Cameroon.
