The Ondo State Police Command has confirmed the tragic death of a police inspector who was fatally stabbed during an encounter with suspected hoodlums in the Arakale area of Akure, the state capital. The incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, prompting an immediate security response.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka Olushola, the command felt compelled to address misleading reports circulating on social media, which alleged widespread attacks and unrest in the area. DSP Ayanlade described these reports as “unfounded” and “deliberate attempts by some individuals to distort facts and undermine recent security advancements in the state.”

“The attention of the Ondo State Police Command has been drawn to misleading and unverified stories alleging widespread attacks in the Arakale area of Akure. These reports are false and appear intended to mislead the public,” the statement read.

DSP Ayanlade explained that the slain officer was performing lawful duties when he encountered some “recalcitrant individuals,” an encounter that escalated into a violent confrontation. “To set the record straight, the Command confirms that an incident occurred in the early hours of yesterday involving a police officer on duty. An altercation ensued between the officer and some recalcitrant individuals, during which the officer was tragically stabbed,” the statement added.

The injured officer was immediately evacuated by operatives and rushed to a hospital, but despite medical intervention, he succumbed to his injuries.

Following the incident, the Commissioner of Police deployed additional officers to the scene, ensuring enhanced security and community reassurance. Two suspects, Shina Jacob (25) and Felix Olalekan (32), have since been arrested for their alleged involvement in the attack and are in police custody.

The Ondo State Police Command has called on residents to remain calm, disregard unverified information circulating on social media, and cooperate with security agencies to maintain peace.
