A popular Nupe lawyer on X, known widely as Egi Nupe, has generated significant conversation on the platform after expressing support for the proposal to rename the University of Ilorin after Shehu Alimi.

His comment came as a response to growing criticism from users who oppose the idea. In his post, he questioned why people were upset about renaming the institution after Alimi, a historical figure central to Ilorin’s political and religious development.

The lawyer’s stance drew increased attention because he is often seen engaging with prominent Yoruba influencers on X, including well-known figures such as Omojuwa and Ogbẹni Diipọ. His position on the renaming proposal has therefore surprised some of his followers, who expected him to take a more cautious position on an issue many regard as historically sensitive.

Reactions to his statement highlighted long-standing debates around the history of Ilorin, including differing interpretations of the roles played by key historical figures and how those events shaped the city’s identity. While Ilorin is widely recognised as a Yoruba city, historical accounts relating to its early leadership and cultural evolution remain subjects of ongoing discussion.

Some Yoruba users on X questioned the lawyer’s perspective and expressed concern that his support for the proposal does not align with sentiments shared by many in the community. Others noted that his strong public ties with Yoruba influencers made his stance even more unexpected.

As the debate continued to trend, the lawyer had not issued further clarification, while discussions over the renaming proposal and Ilorin’s historical narrative continued across the platform.
