Speed Limit Device Compulsory for Commercial, Private Vehicles – FRSC

The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) Command in Ogun State on Wednesday in Abeokuta said the use of speed limit device is compulsory for both commercial and private vehicles.

Anthony Uga, FRSC’s sector commander in Ogun State said during the command’s 2024 first quarter workshop that this would be a means of reducing road crashes in the country.

He spoke at the workshop on the theme ‘Aggressive Public Enlightenment on the merits of Speed Limit Device Installation in all Vehicles as a Panacea to Stemming RTC in Ogun’.

Uga noted that speeding caused over 90 per cent of road traffic crashes (RTCs) in the state.

”The speed limit device has come to stay because the device has saved many lives,” he said, urging motorists to comply with the speed limit device policy.

The sector commander disclosed that the FRSC would be embarking on aggressive enforcement of the use of speed limit device.

“Only accredited vendors from FRSC is allowed to instal speed limit device in vehicles.

“The vendors are listed on FRSC websites. Speed limit device does not damage vehicles because it does not have any connection with the engine.

“Any speed beyond 100 kilometres per hour (km/h) is not allowed. At FRSC, we are re-engineering our activities to meet the challenges of road safety.

“We are ready to partner and work with transport unions in order to ensure all vehicles are installed with speed limit devices,” he added.

Uga further stated that the FRSC would continue to ensure safety on the highways, and urged motorists to always obey traffic rules and regulations.

Earlier, Alhaji Jamiu Popoola, representing Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), noted that the speed limit device enforcement should not be for commercial vehicles alone.

He explained that the union was ready to support the FRSC in achieving the objectives and reasons for the installation of speed limit device in commercial vehicles.
