A road crash involving two cement-laden trucks and a tricycle that occurred at the Tollgate Junction along Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway late Monday claimed the life of a pedestrian while two others were injured.

The spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, confirmed the accident in a telephone conversation with our correspondent on Tuesday.

Akinbiyi said that the accident involved two cement-laden trucks and a tricycle.

The trucks, one unregistered SINO truck and a HOWO truck with number plate GSW 180 XA had collided with a tricycle with number plate KLE 876 WZ, leading to a further collision with a yet-to-be-identified pedestrian.

The impact of the collision resulted in the tricycle ramming into a pedestrian who was standing at the junction, killing the pedestrian and injuring two others.

Akinbiyi said, β€œA fatal road crash occurred at Tollgate, Ota. It involved two trucks both loaded with Lafarge cement moving inbound Lagos and a tricycle.

β€œTwo people were injured in the multiple crash while one person was recorded dead. According to an eyewitness account, the HOWO truck was coming from Sango and was driving behind the Sino truck.

β€œBut due to excessive speed, it lost control and rammed into the Sino truck from behind before veering into a tricycle on the other side of the road coming from Lagos and in the process crushing a pedestrian who was by the side of the road either waiting to cross the road or board a vehicle.”

The TRACE spokesperson added that the body of the deceased pedestrian was deposited at the Ifo General Hospital morgue while the injured victims were taken to Ota General Hospital.

“Unfortunately, he died on the spot and his body was deposited at the Ifo General Hospital morgue, while the injured were rushed to the Ota General Hospital.

β€œHowever, all the accident vehicles involved have been towed to the Sango Divisional Police Station. Regrettably, one of the truck drivers escaped while the other was seriously injured”, he said.

Akinbiyi who commiserated with the family of the victim, however, cautioned motorists against excessive speeding.

β€œWhile TRACE commiserates with the family of the deceased, motorists are charged to avoid excessive speeding given its attendant consequences,” he concluded.

In a similar development, tragedy struck in Ore, Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State on April 6, when a truck crushed two people to death.

It was gathered that the accident, which occurred along Ore-Okitipupa Expressway, Idi Mango area of the community, involved a truck and a motorcycle.

The motorcycle was said to be conveying the victims who were said to be siblings.

A source said the accident was caused by the recklessness of the motorcycle rider on the road, explaining that the motorcycle rammed into the truck which was coming from opposite direction.
